Curriculum : School Programs

In accordance with its mission, Fox River Country Day School endeavors to provide students with programs that provide a balance between academics, arts, athletics, and personal development. These programs are embedded in the daily life of the school and extend to extracurricular trips and events.

Morning Assembly [top]

On Monday & Friday mornings at 8:10 a.m., students in Grades 1-8 gather in the Gym for assembly. The purpose of this gathering is to bring the community together before each day in order to share information and highlight community values represented by the CBQs. As with all events, parents are welcome to attend assembly. A special seating section is available so that parents may sit with their children. We ask that punctuality be honored.

Preschool and Kindergarten “morning assemblies” take place primarily in the form of circle time, a gathering of the class for the purpose of bridging the transition between home and school.

Swimming [top]

The school counts its swimming pool among its prized assets. Swimming instruction begins in the Preschool and continues through Grade Four. While Preschool classes focus mainly on water safety and comfort, all levels are based upon the American Red Cross curriculum. Swimming opportunities, including a swim team in the winter term, are available for Middle School students.

Computer Lab [top]

The school believes that technology is a gateway to innovative learning, allowing the freedom to link ideas and make new connections. The school currently has 10 student workstations in its lab, all of which are networked. Also in use in the lab are a digital camera, a scanner, and video projector. Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 come to the lab for classes. Technology curriculum at Fox River Country Day is based on the National Educational Technology Standards for Students. Before they are allowed to use the computers at school, students in Grades 4-8, along with their parents, must sign the “Acceptable Use Agreement.”

Developmental Reading [top]

This provision is designed to benefit students in Grades 1-8 who need extra assistance in developing their phonetic and reading skills.

Electives [top]

Middle School students (6-8) participate in group activities of their choice every other Friday for a designated period. A variety of choices are offered, based on teacher expertise and student interest. Offerings in the past have included topics such as creative dramatics, math contests, batik, outdoor cooking, chess, and swimming.

Molter Saturday Night Open House [top]

Regularly throughout the year, the headmaster invites combinations of Middle School classes to Molter House for a Saturday night (7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.) of games, crafts, baking, movies, and music. Take off your shoes and have some family fun! Parents and other faculty are always welcome.

Physical Education [top]

Physical education is an integral part of the school’s curriculum and is designed to provide optimum growth and development for each child. The activities for the youngest students focus on development of social skills like cooperation and following directions. Activities for students in Kindergarten-Grade 5 are designed to improve their individual athletic skills and provide opportunities for them to work and play together.

Every student in Kindergarten-Grade 5 is required to participate. A student who is ill or injured will be excused only if he/she has a note from home or a doctor.

Team Sports and Intramurals [top]

Students in Grades 6-8 participate in either intramurals or team sports. Students will be offered a choice of team offerings in the fall, winter, and spring. This program offers students the chance to develop their individual skills and increase their knowledge of a sport. Fox River Country Day values the team concept, where working towards a common goal, trusting and supporting teammates, having fun, and good sportsmanship all go hand in hand.

We expect to be able to offer the following team sports in 2003-2004:
Fall: soccer (girls and boys) and intramurals
Winter: basketball (girls and boys), swimming (co-ed), and intramurals
Spring: Track & Field and intramurals

It is the school’s policy that all interested students may play on a team.

Students who do not wish to play a team sport are required to participate in intramurals unless they have chosen the drama option for fall or winter. This program will run during the same time as team sports. Good sportsmanship, a positive attitude, and conditioning are emphasized as students improve their skills in intramural soccer, touch football, volleyball, basketball, swimming, running, floor hockey, softball, etc.

Students are expected to attend every afternoon activity in its entirety. If a student needs to be excused, he/she must speak to the coach ahead of time. Athletes or thespians who are not picked up after afternoon activities will be sent to Supervised Study which runs from 4:30-5:30 each day in the Main Building; see Plus Program for guidelines and fee details.

Students are responsible for providing and cleaning their own practice uniforms. It is recommended that a spare set of gym clothes, as well as cold weather gear, be left in the student’s locker. Game uniforms will be issued and laundered by the school.

Lunch [top]

A nutritious hot lunch is prepared on campus in our kitchen every school day, and served cafeteria style for Grades 1-8 and family style for Preschool and Kindergarten. Good manners are expected of each student, and before leaving the lunch area each student is expected to clear his/her immediate area of all litter and to assist in picking up any trash in the area.

Menus are regularly sent home to parents and also available on the school’s website.
